Program Coordinator, Paramedic Practice

 

Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine, Regional Base Hospital Program is responsible for providing medical oversight through certification, recertification, continuing education, and continuous quality improvement to approximately 3,300 paramedics who are employed by the following services:

 

Beausoleil First Nation Paramedic Services

County of Simcoe Paramedic Services

Halton Region Paramedic Services

Muskoka Paramedic Services

Peel Regional Paramedic Services

Rama First Nation Paramedic Services

Toronto Paramedic Services

 

The Program Coordinator, Paramedic Practice is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the effective operation of his/her program including the direct supervision of casual staff and assisting with the management of budget items related to the manager’s program focus.  In addition, the Program Coordinator – Paramedic Practice is responsible for:

  • providing leadership to their peers within their area of responsibility.
  • the development and delivery of high quality instruction, ensuring that certification and recertification processes are followed, and effective quality assurance programs are applied for healthcare providers served by SUNNYBROOK
  • ensuring all medical/clinical program content are approved by the Medical Council for medical accuracy.
  • promoting and fostering  strong working relationships with paramedics, paramedic services and other key stakeholders.
  • identifying regional issues and provide recommendations to the Program Manager(s), Senior Manager, and Medical Directors on strategies for training and development that will be responsive to operational and educational and certification needs.

 

Reporting: 

Under the general direction of the Senior Manager, Regional Base Hospital program.

 

 

Summary of Duties:

  • Assist in the development of regional goals & objectives for effective program operation.
  • Develop, schedule, track completion, coordinates and facilitate education programming for Primary, and/or Advanced Care Paramedics.
  • Provide and track, leadership to the casual faculty through formal and informal performance feedback.
  • Assist with the development of educational programs as required. 
  • Forward quality improvement recommendations to the Program Manager.
  • Inform the Program Manager of all Program activities and operational matters.           
  • Report any abnormal incidents that have/may occur with respect to patient, communication, or equipment to the Medical Director and Program Manager, and follow up as directed.
  • Maintain records of all quality management activities as directed.
  • Develop/participate in field trials and research as directed.
  • Act as a resource and liaison for paramedics, affiliated paramedic services, and allied health care and emergency agencies regarding pre-hospital health care, policies, and procedures, medical directives, paramedic training, certification, and patient care.
  • Implement and evaluate operational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in Regional Paramedic Service, Base Hospital and Provincial committees, working groups or meetings as needed or requested.
  • Deliver/attend faculty training sessions, staff meetings, and other meetings as necessary
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Advanced or Critical Care Paramedic or equivalent (or related discipline) as appropriate by the program with a minimum of 5 years of experience
  • Baccalaureate (preferred) or equivalent Community College diploma in a Health Sciences Program
  • Certificate in Adult Education (preferred)
  • A Demonstrated knowledge of current legislation pertaining to the delivery of pre-hospital care and emergency health services
  • Demonstrated leadership, facilitation, and coaching skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent presentation skills.  
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize as required.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  • Demonstrated experience with low/mid fidelity simulation devices
